Racing offers more bet types than any other code, and they are not equally priced. A win bet, a boxed trifecta and a multi-race bet carry very different costs for the same money, and all three costs can be calculated before you commit anything. This page is the comparison, with the arithmetic written out.

One calculation compares everything

Whatever the bet type, the question is the same: what fraction of the money going in comes back out. On a fixed-odds market that fraction is one divided by the sum of the implied probabilities. On a pool bet it is one minus the takeout. Both are percentages of turnover and both can be compared directly, which is why learning the one calculation is worth more than learning twenty bet types.

Fixed odds, worked

Divide one by each decimal price and add the lot. A ten-runner field whose implied probabilities add to one point twenty is carrying twenty per cent over fair, so the book returns about eighty-three cents in the dollar across all runners. A field adding to one point ten returns about ninety-one cents. Same race, same runners, a difference of eight cents in every dollar you stake.

  • Fixed odds: add 1/price across the field; the excess over 1.00 is the margin.
  • Pools: the takeout is published per bet type; subtract it from one.
  • Compare the two numbers directly — they measure the same thing.
  • Do it on the actual race in front of you, because books vary race to race.

Exotics cost more in two separate ways

An exotic pool — quinella, trifecta, first four — generally carries a higher takeout than the win pool, which is the first cost. The second is structural: an exotic requires several things to happen in order, so the chance of collecting is far lower and the variance of your results is far higher. Those are different costs and both apply at once.

The combination arithmetic

A boxed trifecta covers every order of the runners you select. Five runners boxed is five times four times three, which is sixty combinations. At a dollar a combination that is a sixty dollar bet, not a five dollar one. Six runners boxed is a hundred and twenty combinations. Seven is two hundred and ten. The stake grows much faster than the number of runners, which is where most unintended large bets in racing come from.

5 boxed

5 x 4 x 3 = 60 combinations.

6 boxed

6 x 5 x 4 = 120 combinations.

7 boxed

7 x 6 x 5 = 210 combinations.

First four is the same sum with another factor

A boxed first four of five runners is five times four times three times two, which is a hundred and twenty combinations. Of six runners it is three hundred and sixty. The multiplication is the bet: before you type a unit stake, work out the number of combinations and multiply, because the slip will happily accept a figure you did not intend.

Flexi betting: buying a percentage of the dividend

Flexi betting lets you nominate a total stake rather than a unit stake, and the system divides it across the combinations. You then collect that same percentage of the full dividend. It is a genuinely useful mechanism because it decouples the bet structure from the amount of money, and it is widely misread as a discount, which it is not.

Worked

Twenty dollars across a sixty-combination boxed trifecta is thirty-three and a third cents per combination, which is thirty-three point three per cent of a full unit. If the trifecta pays a dividend of nine hundred dollars for a one dollar unit, you collect about three hundred. Nothing has been discounted: you bought a third of the bet and you collect a third of the dividend.

  • Percentage = total stake / number of combinations, as a share of one unit.
  • Your return is that percentage of the published dividend.
  • Flexi changes the size of the bet, never its cost structure.
  • The takeout on the pool is unaffected by how you staked into it.

Multi-race bets compound everything

Bets spanning several races multiply the difficulty and, on fixed odds, multiply the margin. A four-leg racing multi at five per cent a leg is carrying about twenty-two per cent over fair. On pool bets spanning multiple races the takeout is charged once on a pool that is harder to hit, which produces large dividends and a very low strike rate. Both shapes are legitimate products and both are more expensive per dollar than a single win bet.

Why the big dividend is not evidence of value

A large dividend reflects a low probability, not a generous operator. The useful comparison is always the fraction returned across all participants, and on multi-race products that fraction is lower than on single races, not higher. If you want the lottery-shaped payout, buy it knowingly; just do not record it as the best value on the card.

Where promotions interact with all of this

Racing promotions commonly exclude bet types, cap the stake, set a minimum price, or exclude the place portion of an each-way bet. Because the bet types differ so much in cost, an offer restricted to one of them is worth very different amounts depending on which. And a stake-not-returned bonus bet is worth the stake multiplied by the odds minus one, which on a short-priced favourite is a small fraction of its face value.

Read the exclusions before the headline

The exclusion list and the minimum price determine the value of a racing promotion almost entirely. Work out the value at the minimum permitted price and on the permitted bet types, and compare that figure with what the promotion requires you to stake to qualify. 18+ only; Gambling Help Online is free and open at any hour on 1800 858 858, and BetStop is the national self-exclusion register for licensed Australian wagering operators.
